2025 NWFL: Dominant Sunshine Queens Dismantle Fortress Ladies 3–0 in Championship Opener

Sunshine Queens FC of Ondo State announced their arrival at the 2025 NWFL Championship Playoffs in Umuahia with an emphatic performance, cruising past Fortress Ladies of Benin with a convincing 3–0 victory in their opening match.

 

Played under a lively atmosphere, the Akure-based side displayed fluid attacking football, pressing high and punishing defensive lapses from their opponents.

 

The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when Adenuga Oluwabunmi latched onto a perfectly weighted pass from Lolade Akintunde, sending Sunshine Queens’ supporters into jubilation. Just six minutes later, the Ondo side doubled their lead as Mirabel Irabor calmly slotted home from close range after an intelligent assist from Mistura Olamilekan in the 33rd minute.

 

Fortress Ladies attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, but Sunshine Queens maintained composure in midfield and defensive discipline at the back. The decisive third goal arrived in the 66th minute when Bolaji Azeez was brought down inside the penalty area. Precious Edewor stepped up to convert from the spot, sealing the 3–0 win.

 

It was not all smooth sailing for Sunshine Queens, however, as Lucky Victory and Lolade Akintunde received yellow cards in the second half for reckless challenges. Head coach Oseni Rafiu responded with late substitutions, bringing on Amos Foluke, Adeleke Ganiyat, and Faith Oyewole to inject fresh energy and see out the game.

 

At full time, the Ondo State–sponsored side had showcased grit, flair, and determination, sending a strong message of intent to their rivals. With three points secured and a clean sheet to their name, Sunshine Queens now turn their focus to their next crucial clash against Unification FC of Lagos, as they aim to maintain their winning momentum in the championship.
