Sunderland pulled off one of the shocks of the Premier League season as Chemsdine Talbi scored deep into stoppage time to seal a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The dramatic victory lifted the newly promoted Black Cats to second in the table, just months after returning to the top flight following an eight-year absence.
Chelsea had looked on course to climb to second themselves when Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring in just the fourth minute with his first goal for the club. However, with Brazilian starlet Estevão surprisingly benched and Cole Palmer sidelined through injury, the Blues struggled to create clear chances despite their early lead.
Sunderland equalised in the 22nd minute through Wilson Isidor, who bundled home from close range after Chelsea failed to deal with a long throw. The visitors frustrated Chelsea throughout the second half, defending resolutely even after Estevão’s introduction on the hour mark.
As the game seemed destined for a draw, Sunderland struck decisively on the counter in the 93rd minute. Brian Brobbey led the break and set up Talbi, who curled a brilliant shot into the bottom corner to complete the upset. The defeat leaves Chelsea in seventh, with their hopes of a title challenge fading rapidly.
At St. James’ Park, Newcastle United claimed a much-needed 2-1 victory over Fulham thanks to captain Bruno Guimarães’ last-minute winner. Jacob Murphy had put the Magpies ahead in the first half after capitalising on a defensive mistake by Calvin Bassey, but Fulham equalised just before the hour through Sasa Lukic’s header.
Newcastle pushed hard for a late breakthrough, and their persistence paid off when Bernd Leno parried William Osula’s shot into the path of Guimarães, who swept home to earn Eddie Howe’s men their third league win of the season. The result lifted Newcastle to 11th, just three points off the top four, while Fulham slumped to their fourth straight defeat and remain perilously close to the relegation zone.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich maintained their perfect start to the season with a 3-0 win away to 10-man Borussia Mönchengladbach. Goals from Joshua Kimmich, Raphael Guerreiro, and teenage star Lennart Karl secured Bayern’s 13th win in as many matches across all competitions.
Gladbach’s Jens Castrop was sent off midway through the first half after a VAR review for a dangerous challenge on Luis Díaz, giving Bayern a numerical advantage. Despite that, the visitors struggled to break through until Kimmich fired home from inside the box on 64 minutes. Guerreiro added a second shortly after with a sweeping finish before 17-year-old Karl completed the rout with a stunning curling strike late on.
Elsewhere, RB Leipzig thrashed Augsburg 6-0, with six different players finding the net to tighten their grip on second place, while Eintracht Frankfurt bounced back from their midweek Champions League loss to Liverpool with a 2-0 victory over St. Pauli, thanks to a brace from Jonathan Burkardt.
Wolfsburg ended their winless run with a 1-0 triumph at Hamburg, Hoffenheim defeated Heidenheim 3-1, and Borussia Dortmund had the chance to move up to third later in the evening with a home match against Cologne.
