Sunderland Seal Europa League Spot After Historic Win Over Chelsea

Posted : 24 May 2026

Sunderland secured a historic return to European football after defeating Chelsea 2-1 on Sunday, becoming only the fifth newly promoted side in Premier League history to qualify for Europe in their first season back in the top flight.

The victory lifted Sunderland into seventh place in the final standings, earning them a place in next season’s Europa League. Bournemouth also secured qualification for the competition after drawing 1-1 away at Nottingham Forest.

Trai Hume opened the scoring midway through the first half with a superb volley that sparked celebrations among the home supporters. Sunderland doubled their advantage in the second half when Chelsea defender Malo Gusto accidentally turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

Chelsea attempted a comeback through Cole Palmer, who pulled one goal back, but their hopes suffered a major setback after Wesley Fofana was shown a red card. The defeat meant Chelsea missed out on European qualification entirely for next season.

Brighton & Hove Albion claimed the Conference League spot despite suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester United. The result was enough for Brighton to finish eighth in the table.

Manchester United’s victory was inspired once again by Bruno Fernandes, who scored and also provided his 21st assist of the campaign — a new seasonal record. United had already confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League alongside Arsenal, Manchester City, and Aston Villa.

Liverpool also secured Champions League qualification after earning the point they needed in a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace still have the chance to join the Europa League next season if they defeat Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final scheduled to take place in Leipzig on Wednesday.
