Sunderland Begin European Adventure After 53-Year Wait

Sunderland will make a long-awaited return to European football on Wednesday when they host AZ Alkmaar at the Stadium of Light in the Europa League. The fixture marks the club’s first European appearance in 53 years and represents another major milestone in a remarkable revival.

The Black Cats were playing in League One just over four years ago, but their fortunes have changed dramatically. Sunderland secured promotion to the Championship in 2022 before earning a return to the Premier League through the play-offs in May 2025. They then surprised many observers by finishing seventh in their first season back in England’s top flight, earning European qualification.

Sunderland boast a proud history, having won six English top-flight championships, although their most recent title came in 1936. The club enjoyed a reputation for ambition during the 1950s and were nicknamed the “Bank of England club” because of their significant spending.

Despite those investments, major silverware remained elusive. Sunderland’s last major trophy came in 1973, when they defeated Leeds United in the FA Cup final.

The club’s long period of decline did little to diminish the loyalty of its supporters. Sunderland continued to attract large crowds even during their years in League One, regularly drawing more than 30,000 fans.

Now, the 49,000-capacity Stadium of Light is once again hosting Premier League football and is preparing for its first European club fixture. The venue opened in 1997 and has become the setting for one of the most significant chapters in the club’s modern history.

The resurgence has also been a major reward for owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, who acquired a stake in Sunderland in 2021 before increasing his involvement in the club.

The appointment of Régis Le Bris as head coach in June 2024 proved pivotal. The Frenchman guided Sunderland back to the Premier League at the first opportunity before overseeing their unexpected success in the top flight.

With captain Granit Xhaka providing leadership, Sunderland now turn their attention to AZ Alkmaar despite an inconsistent opening to the new campaign.

“It’s a symbol for the club. We are getting better, the momentum is big and for our fans it is going to be crazy to be fair,” Le Bris told TNT Sports.

“We are really proud to be in this position. We earned this opportunity last season with a great season. We had tough moments but at the end we stayed consistent.”

He added: “It’s important to show our desire, to show the city, our togetherness, the connection with our fans.”

Sunderland Supporters Relishing the Revival

For Sunderland supporters, the transformation of the club has been remarkable. After years of frustration and disappointment, European football has provided a fresh source of optimism.

Michael Lough, writing for Wise Men Say, described the change in the supporters’ experience as a move from enduring disappointment to finally enjoying the club’s progress.

He also highlighted the sense of unity that has developed between the city, players, supporters and club under Le Bris, describing the connection as something rarely seen during Sunderland’s difficult years.

Sunderland are not the only English club embarking on a new European adventure this season. Bournemouth will also compete in continental competition for the first time after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.

Andoni Iraola guided Bournemouth to that historic finish before departing for Liverpool, with Marco Rose now taking charge of the south-coast club.

Bournemouth will travel to Spain to face Real Sociedad on Thursday. Rose’s side have endured a frustrating beginning to the Premier League campaign, having taken the lead in each of their first four matches without securing a victory because of late concessions.

“Everyone here in Bournemouth is looking forward to this game,” Rose said. “It’s going to be a special night for the club against top opposition. I’m really proud to be part of this.”

Crystal Palace complete the English contingent in the Europa League after winning the UEFA Conference League last season.

English clubs have enjoyed considerable success in the competition in recent years, with Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur lifting the trophy in the previous two seasons. However, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace arrive with less continental pedigree and could provide a different challenge to established European powers such as AC Milan, Juventus and Benfica.

Sunderland’s return therefore represents more than another European fixture. It is the latest symbol of a club that has travelled from the depths of League One back to the Premier League and now onto the continental stage.
