According to Troost-Ekong, the match aimed to support underprivileged children and give back to the community through the power of football.
The 2025 edition, themed ‘PlayForPurpose’, received sponsorship support from NoOnes, BFA Sports, Puma, and Power Horse. Notable guests included the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, who captained a team comprising past and present football stars.
Star players in attendance were Obafemi Martins, Victor Osimhen, Odion Ighalo, Victor Boniface, Ahmed Musa, John Ogu, Tolu Arokodare, Wilfred Ndidi, Joseph Yobo, Stanley Nwabali, Frank Onyeka, Sikiru Alimi, and Cameroonian legend Alex Song.
Entertainment celebrities such as singer Odumodublvck (Tochukwu Ojogwu), comedian AY (Ayo Makun), and actor Broda Shaggi (Samuel Perry) also featured in the match.
The game ended 7–5 with goals from Alimi (brace), Musa, Boniface, Martins, AY, Odumodublvck, Ndidi, Ideye, and Iheanacho.In a penalty shootout, Boniface, Zlatan, Yemo Lee, UK, AY, and Arokodare converted their spot kicks, while Song, Ideye, and Dikko missed.
AY was named Man of the Match, and Troost-Ekong lifted the Charity Cup after the final whistle.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the organisers, stating:
“I’m here to support our Super Eagles captain. This is a noble cause, and my government will always encourage such initiatives.”
Troost-Ekong emphasized the importance of the event:
“Football has changed our lives, and it can change theirs too. We support them in two ways: through education and football development.”
