Former Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has spoken publicly about Maduka Okoye's emergence as the preferred starting goalkeeper for the Super Eagles. The shot-stopper has been absent from the national team camp since the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in January. He played a massive role in guiding Nigeria to a third-place finish, capping his tournament with an impressive performance against Egypt.
Following his successful continental campaign, Nwabali parted ways with South African club Chippa United by mutual consent. His departure ended a four-year stint and followed months of heavy transfer speculation linking him to several new destinations. However, the Nigerian keeper has remained a free agent without a professional club connection. This extended period of inactivity ultimately cost him his invitation to the latest international window.
In his absence, Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye successfully seized the opportunity to reclaim the coveted number one jersey. Okoye delivered two highly assured performances during high-profile international friendlies against Poland and Portugal. During the recent match against Portugal, Nwabali hosted an interactive social media live session to watch the game with fans. When questioned about losing his starting place, the keeper maintained a highly professional and diplomatic stance.
He explained that international football requires rotating options to give different squad members a fair opportunity. He stated that not every goalkeeper can play at the same time: a lot of players need an opportunity to perform. Despite his calm perspective, external football experts believe Nwabali faces an incredibly difficult task to regain his starting role.
Okoye has shown remarkable form and confidence under pressure in his recent outings for the West African side. The Udinese star made several world-class saves against Portugal to prevent a much heavier defeat for his team. Consequently, national team head coach Éric Chelle is highly expected to stick with Okoye as his primary option. Nwabali must now focus on securing a new club contract during the summer transfer window to revive his international aspirations.
