Stade de Reims Sign Nigerian Defender Godwin Itotomi on Loan from Grassrunners

French Ligue 2 side Stade de Reims have completed the signing of promising Nigerian defender Godwin Itotomi from Grassrunners FC on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent. The club confirmed the transfer through an official statement after the centre-back impressed during a successful trial in France.

The powerful defender will join Reims Révélation, the club's elite development squad, as he begins his first spell in European football. The move is part of Reims' continued investment in young talents with high potential, giving Itotomi an opportunity to develop in a competitive environment.

Itotomi earned the contract after spending several days at the Raymond Kopa Training Centre, where he trained with the reserve team and featured in friendly matches. He caught the attention of the coaching staff with assured displays against Paris Saint-Germain's Under-19 side and German club Eintracht Frankfurt, convincing Reims to secure his services for the 2026-27 season.

Club officials believe the Nigerian has the physical attributes and technical qualities needed to adapt quickly to European football. Reims also stated that the club will provide the right conditions, both on and off the pitch, to help him continue his development while adjusting to life in France.

The young defender arrives with a growing reputation after emerging through Nigeria's N-Youth League Cup. Although primarily a centre-back, Itotomi showed his ability to contribute in attack by scoring four goals in 22 appearances during the competition. His performances highlighted his aerial strength, defensive awareness and threat from set pieces.

The loan move gives Itotomi the chance to compete for a place in the Reims development squad while working towards a future breakthrough into the senior team. Reims have increasingly looked to identify and nurture young international prospects, and the Nigerian now joins a pathway designed to prepare emerging players for professional football.

Itotomi could also make an early return to Africa later this year.
