Sporting Lisbon staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in Champions League history on Tuesday night, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Bodo/Glimt 5-0 and advance to the quarter-finals. The Portuguese side’s performance left the home fans in raptures and the Norwegian visitors stunned.
From the opening whistle, Sporting dominated the game with relentless energy and attacking pressure. The first half saw continuous threats on Bodo/Glimt’s goal, with Francisco Trincao creating multiple chances but failing to find the target. Pedro González and Luis Suarez also tested goalkeeper Nikita Chaikin, who managed to keep the scoreline level in the early stages.
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when a corner from Trincao found Gonzalo Inácio, who headed home to ignite the stadium. Most of the first half was spent in Bodo/Glimt’s half, as the Norwegian team struggled to cope with Sporting’s intensity. Bodo/Glimt’s best opportunity came from a corner, with Odin Byortoftt’s header striking the crossbar.
Sporting continued their relentless attack after the interval. In the 61st minute, Luis Suarez set up Gonzalves for the second goal. Shortly after, a VAR review awarded Sporting a penalty for a handball in the box. Suarez calmly converted, completing the turnaround to make it 3-0 and erase the first-leg deficit entirely.
The Portuguese side did not relent in extra time. Just two minutes in, Maximiliano Araujo scored following a Trincao assist, followed by Rafael Nell’s goal to complete a sensational 5-0 victory. The result marked a historic turnaround for Sporting Lisbon, sending them into the Champions League quarter-finals while ending Bodo/Glimt’s magical European run.
