Sporting Lagos have been crowned champions of the 2025 Gold Cup, lifting the trophy for the first time after a nail-biting 4-3 penalty shootout victory over FC Ebedei in the final.
It was a dramatic conclusion to an intense contest, as Sporting Lagos squandered a two-goal lead before eventually prevailing in the shootout. The Lagos-based side took control early, capitalizing on an own goal by FC Ebedei’s Joseph Okuaghaare in the 8th minute, who inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net.
Just seven minutes later, FC Ebedei had a golden opportunity to equalize when Olanshile Lawal went one-on-one with Sporting Lagos goalkeeper Clinton Lawani, but the striker failed to convert, sending his effort wide.
Sporting Lagos maintained their 1-0 lead at halftime, but the second half brought even more drama. Only two minutes after the restart, Lasisi Alabi doubled the advantage for Sporting Lagos, finishing off a quick counterattack in the 47th minute.
However, FC Ebedei refused to give up. In the 61st minute, Miracle Osakene pulled one back with a fine strike, injecting new life into the game. The “Oliseh Boys” continued to push forward and were rewarded in extra time when they grabbed a late equalizer from a goalmouth scramble, forcing the match into penalties.
The ensuing shootout was filled with tension. FC Ebedei had a chance to win it when Fanen Terkula stepped up for the decisive kick but missed, allowing Sporting Lagos to seize the moment. The Lagosians converted their final spot kick to seal a 4-3 victory and spark jubilant celebrations.
It was a memorable night for the “Noisy Lagosians,” who displayed resilience, determination, and composure to claim their maiden Gold Cup title — a triumph that will be remembered in the club’s history.
