Sporting Lagos Secures NPFL Promotion After Hard-Fought Victory Over Osun United

Posted : 17 April 2026

Sporting Lagos officially returned to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following a narrow 1-0 win against Osun United. The high-stakes match took place on the final day of the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) season. The "Noisy Lagosians" secured their promotion at the Lanre Leke Stadium in Ile-Ogbo, Osun State.

Entering the final round with 33 points, Sporting Lagos held a slim one-point lead over Akwa United. They knew that only a victory would guarantee their spot in the top flight. In the 17th minute, Alex Leme scored the decisive goal with a clinical header. The play was set up by Aliyu Baba, who received a precise pass from winger Shola Oladunjoye.

The atmosphere remained tense as results from Awka filtered in during the afternoon. Akwa United faced Solution FC in a match that suffered several technical delays. Despite the pressure, Akwa United managed a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Aniebiet Sunday and Michael Okenwa. This result kept the pressure on the Lagos side until the final whistle.

Osun United dominated much of the second half while searching for an equalizer. They launched several attacks that forced the Sporting Lagos defense to remain deep in their own territory. However, the visitors held firm to protect their lead and secure the three points. The victory brings Sporting Lagos to a final total of 36 points from 18 matches.

The club now joins Doma United and Inter Lagos in the upcoming NNL Super 4 competition in Ikenne. This tournament will determine the overall champion of the second tier. After two years away from the elite division, the Lagos-based side has finally achieved its primary goal. The final standings saw Akwa United finish in second place with 35 points, missing out by a single point.

In other Conference B results, Rovers FC earned a 1-0 win against Abakaliki FC. FirstBank FC played out a high-scoring 3-3 draw with Godswill Akpabio United. Additionally, Ekiti United secured a comfortable 2-0 away victory against Stormers SC. Sporting Lagos now prepares for the top flight after a disciplined season.
