Special Eagles Face Spain, Turkey, Egypt in Tough Amputee World Cup Group

Posted : 05 October 2026

Nigeria’s Special Eagles will face a demanding group-stage campaign at the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup after being drawn alongside Turkey, Spain, and Egypt in Group B.

The tournament is scheduled to hold from November 13 to 22 in San Juan de Los Lagos, Mexico, with 24 countries set to compete for the world title.

The Nigerian side is currently intensifying preparations in Abuja, with the National Sports Commission and Nigeria Amputee Football Federation supporting the team’s build-up to the global tournament.

Special Eagles captain Sarafadeen Olalekan Oyeleke said the players were committed to maximising their preparations ahead of the competition.

“We are trying to put all our best to intensify our training, as well as following the instruction of the technical department so that we can understand more of the technicality of the game ahead of the work-up,” Oyeleke said.

He disclosed that the federation had also invited Nigerian players based abroad, particularly those playing professionally in Turkey and other countries, as part of efforts to assemble a strong squad.

“So, there have been a lot of things put in place and also the federation has also made it possible to invite all our national team players playing professional football in Turkey as well as other places so that we can have a formidable team to be able to compete at the World Cup,” he added.

Nigeria is one of seven African countries participating in the tournament, alongside Liberia, Algeria, Egypt, Angola, Ghana, and Morocco.

The draw, conducted on September 26, placed hosts Mexico in Group A with Italy, Liberia, and Algeria.

Group C consists of Brazil, Germany, and Japan, while Angola, Ghana, Colombia, and Iraq make up Group D.

Uzbekistan, Morocco, the United States, and Uruguay are in Group E, with England, Poland, Iran, and Costa Rica completing Group F.

The tournament has been staged every four years since 1986 and has produced several dominant teams.

Russia and Uzbekistan are the most successful nations, having won five titles each, while Brazil, England, and El Salvador have three championships apiece.

Africa has also enjoyed success on the world stage, with Angola becoming the first African nation to win the title in 2018 after defeating Turkey in the final.

Turkey gained revenge four years later, defeating Angola in 2022 to reclaim the championship.

With Nigeria now drawn into a group containing three experienced opponents, the Special Eagles will have their preparations tested from the opening stage as they seek to make a strong impression in Mexico.
