Spanish forward Rodrigo leaves Leeds United for Qatari club Al Rayyan, signing for £26 million

Posted : 13 July 2023
Spanish forward Rodrigo has completed a move from Leeds United to Qatari club Al Rayyan for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old joined Leeds from Valencia in 2020 for a reported fee of £26 million and emerged as the team's top scorer last season with 15 goals.

Al Rayyan, who compete in Qatar's QNB Stars League, triggered a release clause in Rodrigo's contract, which had one year remaining at Elland Road.

During his time at Leeds, Rodrigo made 97 appearances and found the net 28 times.

In June, he was an unused substitute in Spain's Nations League final victory over Croatia, decided by a penalty shootout.

Rodrigo now joins the list of players departing Leeds following their relegation to the Championship, including United States midfielder Brenden Aaronson, as well as defenders Diego Llorente and Robin Koch.

Aaronson has signed with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, Llorente has rejoined Roma in Italy, and Koch has joined Eintracht Frankfurt, also in the Bundesliga, all on season-long loan deals.

Last week, Leeds announced the appointment of former Norwich City manager Daniel Farke as their new head coach on a four-year contract.
