Spain has reclaimed the No. 1 position in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings for the first time since 2014, according to the latest update released on Thursday. This reshuffle comes after over 200 national-team matches were played since the previous ranking, causing significant movement across the top 50 teams.
Reigning World Cup champions Argentina dropped to No. 3 following a 1-0 defeat to Ecuador in the CONMEBOL qualifiers on 8 September, while France moved up to No. 2. Despite Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela earlier in September, it wasn’t enough to maintain their position, ending their reign at the top since April 2023.
Germany experienced the most dramatic fall in the top 10, dropping three places to No. 12 after losing 2-0 to Slovakia in the UEFA qualifiers. This marks the first time Germany has been outside the top 10 since October 2024. Slovakia, conversely, jumped ten spots to No. 42, re-entering the Top 50. Morocco also climbed above Germany, sitting at No. 11 after a strong run of results in the African Nations Championship.
In North America, Canada moved up two places to No. 26 following wins against Romania and Wales, while the United States dropped to No. 16 after a mixed set of results. Mexico fell one spot to No. 14 despite recording two draws since their Gold Cup victory over the USMNT. Among the biggest declines globally, Zimbabwe dropped nine positions to No. 125.
