Spain will put their outstanding defensive record on the line when they face Belgium in Friday's FIFA World Cup quarter-final in Los Angeles. The European champions have yet to concede a goal in the tournament and became the first team in World Cup history to keep six consecutive clean sheets after edging Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16.
While Spain have not been the tournament's highest-scoring side, their disciplined, possession-based style has made them one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Mikel Oyarzabal has stepped up with four goals, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal continues to influence matches despite still regaining full fitness after an injury late last season. Midfielder Dani Olmo praised his Barcelona teammate's ability to attract defenders and create space for others, saying his overall contribution goes well beyond goals and assists.
Spain's defensive organisation has been equally impressive. The team has allowed very few shots on target throughout the competition, with every player contributing to the defensive effort. According to Olmo, head coach Luis de la Fuente has built a system in which attackers are expected to defend from the front, helping goalkeeper Unai Simón and the back line maintain their historic run of clean sheets.
Belgium, however, arrive full of confidence after overcoming a difficult start to the tournament. They staged a dramatic comeback to eliminate Senegal before cruising past co-hosts the United States 4-1 in the last 16, with Charles De Ketelaere scoring twice in a commanding display.
The Red Devils still possess the experience of Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, while younger stars Jeremy Doku and Leandro Trossard add pace and creativity. Lukaku has continued to climb the World Cup scoring charts, and Courtois believes Belgium have improved with every match and are capable of upsetting one of the tournament favourites.
Friday's encounter marks Belgium's third World Cup quarter-final appearance in four tournaments as they chase a historic first place in the final. Spain, meanwhile, are aiming to continue their march toward a second World Cup title and keep their remarkable defensive record intact.
