Lamine Yamal Condemns Racist Chants During Spain-Egypt Friendly

Posted : 01 April 2026

Spain winger Lamine Yamal described the racist chants directed at players during Spain’s 0-0 friendly draw with Egypt in Barcelona as “disrespectful and intolerable.” The 18-year-old, a practising Muslim, addressed the incident on Instagram, emphasizing that using religion as a taunt is both ignorant and racist.

The anti-Muslim and xenophobic chants occurred during the first half at RCDE Stadium and prompted police in Spain to launch an investigation. Stadium screens displayed warnings at half-time and early in the second half, asking fans to refrain from discriminatory remarks. Some sections responded with whistles.

Yamal, making his 26th appearance for Spain and a key player in their 2024 European Championship victory, stated that while the chants were aimed at the opposing team and not personally at him, they were still unacceptable. “Football is for enjoying and cheering, not for disrespecting people for who they are or what they believe,” he wrote.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) condemned the behavior, asserting its stance against racism and any acts of violence in stadiums. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente also criticized the chants, calling them intolerable and warning that violent individuals use football to promote themselves. “They must be removed from society, identified, and kept as far away as possible,” he said.

The friendly match, originally scheduled in Qatar, was relocated to Barcelona’s Espanyol stadium due to conflict in the Middle East. Spain made ten changes from their previous 3-0 victory over Serbia, with Yamal the only player to retain his place, while Egypt missed injured Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah. The draw also caused Spain to lose their top position in the world rankings, ahead of the 2030 World Cup they will co-host.
