Spain Finish Group Stage in Style With Comeback Win Over Italy at Women's Euro

Posted : 12 July 2025

Spain wrapped up their Women's Euro Group B journey with a commanding 3-1 comeback win over Italy, sending a strong message to the rest of the competition. The victory, which followed earlier wins over Portugal and Belgium, confirmed their place at the top of the group with a perfect record. The result also set up a quarter-final meeting with tournament hosts Switzerland.

Coach Montse Tomé’s side has now scored 13 goals across three matches, shared among nine different players—an impressive display of depth and versatility. This ability to adapt during matches has become one of Spain's defining strengths, especially in overcoming slow starts.

Speaking after the match, Tomé expressed satisfaction with her team’s progress. "We've won all three group games for the first time in Spain's history. We're meeting our goals, but we must stay humble, be realistic, and keep adjusting where needed," she said.

Tomé made six changes to her starting lineup for the Italy clash, a move that paid off when Athenea del Castillo, making her first start of the tournament, scored the equaliser in the 14th minute. Her performance highlighted Spain's impressive attacking depth, with Tomé praising her willingness to contribute in any role assigned.

Earlier in the tournament, Spain had dismantled Portugal 5-0 and secured a dominant 6-2 win over Belgium. These results demonstrated their attacking firepower, though occasional defensive vulnerabilities, particularly against counter-attacks, remain a concern.

The return of midfield maestro Aitana Bonmatí to the starting eleven provided a further boost. After recovering from a health setback, Bonmatí impressed in both attack and defence. “She was well-prepared, and today she did a good job on both ends of the pitch,” said Tomé.

Looking ahead to the quarter-final clash against Switzerland, Tomé was cautious but confident. “It’s going to be a tough and interesting match. They have quality players, and we’ll have to manage their structure carefully,” she noted.

With three wins, tactical flexibility, and a deep, talented squad, Spain head into the knockout stages as one of the tournament’s standout contenders.
