Spain Favoured as Belgium Seek World Cup Quarter-Final Upset

Posted : 10 July 2026

Spain and Belgium go head-to-head in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup quarter-final on Friday, with a coveted place in the last four on the line. The European champions arrive as favourites after producing one of the tournament's most impressive campaigns, while Belgium are hoping their experienced squad can spring a major surprise.

Spain have built their success on defensive solidity and midfield dominance. Luis de la Fuente's side have yet to concede a goal in the competition and have controlled matches through disciplined possession football. Although teenage star Lamine Yamal has not been at his prolific best, Mikel Oyarzabal has stepped up in attack, while Rodri and Pedri continue to dictate play from midfield.

Belgium have steadily gathered momentum after overcoming early inconsistencies. The Red Devils advanced to the quarter-finals following victories over Senegal and the United States, with Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Charles De Ketelaere playing key roles. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is also expected to be crucial if Belgium are to withstand Spain's sustained pressure.

The tactical battle is expected to revolve around possession versus counter-attacking football. Spain are likely to dominate the ball and patiently create openings, while Belgium will look to exploit transitions through the pace of Jeremy Doku and the creativity of De Bruyne. Lukaku's physical presence in attack could also test Spain's organised defence.

Based on current form, Spain hold the edge. Their ability to control games, combined with a record-breaking defensive run, makes them favourites to reach the semi-finals. Belgium possess enough quality to make the contest competitive, but they will need to produce one of their best performances of the tournament to progress.

From a betting perspective, Spain are the preferred pick to win the match. A low-scoring encounter is also expected given Spain's outstanding defensive record, making Under 2.5 Goals another popular selection. Spain to Qualify is considered the safest option, while Mikel Oyarzabal is a strong candidate to score at any time after his impressive performances throughout the tournament.

A 2-0 victory for Spain is the predicted outcome, with the European champions expected to continue their march toward another World Cup semi-final.
