Spain delivered an impressive performance in their final preparation match before the World Cup, defeating Peru 3-1 on Monday and reinforcing their status as one of the tournament's leading contenders.
The European champions were without teenage star Lamine Yamal, who is continuing his recovery from injury, but Luis de la Fuente's side still produced a dominant display against a Peruvian team that failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Spain made a dream start in Puebla, Mexico, taking the lead just two minutes into the match. Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that flew into the top corner.
The advantage was doubled in the 32nd minute when Barcelona midfielder Pedri found the net, capping off a controlled first-half performance from the Spanish side.
Eight minutes into the second half, Spain extended their lead to 3-0 in fortunate fashion. Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese misjudged a cross and inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.
Peru managed to pull one goal back midway through the second half when Jairo Vélez scored in front of a crowd of approximately 46,000 spectators, but the result was never seriously in doubt.
Spain will now turn their attention to the World Cup, where they open their campaign against tournament debutants Cape Verde on June 15. There is further good news for the squad, with both Lamine Yamal and winger Nico Williams expected to be available for selection by the time the competition begins.
The convincing victory provides Spain with valuable momentum as they prepare to chase World Cup glory and build on their recent success as European champions.
