Spain, Argentina Ready for Epic World Cup Final as Messi Chases History

Posted : 17 July 2026

Spain and Argentina will contest the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday in a blockbuster clash between the reigning European and South American champions. More than 80,000 fans are expected at New York New Jersey Stadium as football's biggest tournament reaches its conclusion, with Argentina seeking to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.

The final is expected to be a defining moment in Lionel Messi's extraordinary career. The 39-year-old captain has inspired Argentina throughout the tournament with eight goals and a series of match-winning performances, including dramatic comeback victories over Egypt and England. Victory would secure Argentina's fourth World Cup crown and further strengthen Messi's legacy as one of the greatest players in football history.

Under Lionel Scaloni, Argentina have built their campaign on resilience and composure under pressure. The defending champions have repeatedly recovered from difficult situations during the tournament, with Scaloni praising his players' unity, determination and fearless mentality as key ingredients behind another run to the final.

Spain, meanwhile, arrive full of confidence after an impressive 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals. Luis de la Fuente's side has combined disciplined defending with dominant possession football, conceding only one goal throughout the competition while controlling matches through the midfield brilliance of Rodri, Fabián Ruiz and Dani Olmo.

The Spanish attack will once again look to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who has recovered from a hamstring injury to play a decisive role in the knockout rounds. His creativity and pace, combined with Spain's defensive solidity, have made La Roja one of the tournament's most balanced teams as they chase a second World Cup title after their triumph in 2010.

Adding another storyline to the final, De la Fuente will face Argentina coach Scaloni, whom he mentored during the Argentine's coaching education several years ago. While both have spoken warmly of their relationship, Scaloni insists friendship will be put aside for 90 minutes as each coach attempts to guide his nation to football's greatest prize.

The occasion will also attract global attention away from the pitch. United States President Donald Trump and Spain's King Felipe VI are expected among the dignitaries in attendance, while organisers continue monitoring air quality in the New York area because of wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada.
