Southampton seeks N19.5b plus bonuses for Super Eagles striker Onuachu

Posted : 15 February 2024

Southampton, a team aspiring for promotion to the Premier League, has outlined their asking price for Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu. Following his participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles, the towering striker is anticipated to return to Trabzon on Friday.

Reports from Turkish newspaper Karadeniz Gazetesi reveal that Trabzonspor's President, Ertuğrul Doğan, has initiated discussions with Southampton regarding the possibility of securing Onuachu on a permanent basis. The quoted fee for this prospective transfer is 12 million euros, inclusive of various bonuses, which converts to approximately N19.5 billion in Nigerian currency.

Southampton initially acquired Onuachu from Racing Genk for a transfer fee of 18 million euros in January 2023. However, his adaptation to the demands of the Premier League proved challenging during the latter half of the previous season.

Seeking consistent playing time and a return to a top-flight league, Onuachu opted for a loan move to Trabzonspor during the summer transfer window. The decision proved fruitful as the Nigerian striker rediscovered his form, contributing to twelve goal involvements, including 9 goals and 3 assists, in fifteen Super Lig appearances.

With Southampton eyeing potential promotion to the Premier League by the end of the current season, considerations for a new striker might arise, impacting Onuachu's future at St Mary's Stadium.

Trabzonspor, keen on securing Onuachu permanently, aims to negotiate the asking price down from the initially quoted 12 million euros to a reduced sum of 10 million euros. The negotiations will likely play a crucial role in determining the next chapter of Onuachu's career and whether he continues with Southampton or embraces a fresh challenge elsewhere.
