Southampton await verdict in ‘Spygate’ controversy before playoff final

Posted : 19 May 2026

Southampton’s hopes of securing promotion to the Premier League could face a major setback as the club awaits the outcome of a disciplinary hearing linked to alleged spying on Middlesbrough before their Championship playoff semifinal clash.

The case, widely labelled “Spygate,” is being reviewed by an independent commission following accusations that an individual believed to be connected to Southampton secretly recorded a Middlesbrough training session ahead of the playoff meeting between the two clubs.

The English Football League charged Southampton earlier this month, with club chief executive Phil Parsons confirming the club was cooperating fully with the investigation while also conducting its own internal review into the matter.

Southampton defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 on aggregate to book a place in the Championship playoff final against Hull City at Wembley Stadium on May 23. However, the south-coast side could face severe punishment if found guilty of violating EFL rules that ban clubs from observing an opponent’s training session within 72 hours of a match.

Reports from British media claim the alleged individual was spotted filming Middlesbrough’s training from behind a tree before fleeing into a nearby golf club after being confronted by club staff members. Southampton have not publicly commented on the specific allegations.

Middlesbrough have reacted strongly to the incident, calling for Southampton to be removed from the playoff final in order to protect the integrity of the competition. The club also stated it possesses important evidence related to the case and warned it could pursue legal action if necessary.

The controversy has drawn comparisons to a similar incident involving Leeds United in 2019, when former manager Marcelo Bielsa admitted his staff had monitored opponents’ training sessions. Leeds were later fined and formally reprimanded by the EFL.

Despite the ongoing investigation, the EFL said preparations for the playoff final are continuing as scheduled, although officials acknowledged that plans could still change depending on the commission’s decision.
