South Africa Secures World Cup Spot with 3-0 Win Over Rwanda

Posted : 15 October 2025

South Africa defeated Rwanda 3-0 in their final Group C qualifier to clinch a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa cruised to a 3-0 victory over Rwanda in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C qualifier at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday evening. The win secured Bafana Bafana’s qualification for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA as Group C winners. Following this success, the team will turn their focus to international friendlies and preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December.

Rwanda, known as Amavubi, concluded a disappointing qualifying campaign with the defeat, finishing fifth in the group standings. The East African side also missed out on the 2025 AFCON and are expected to arrange friendly matches during the next FIFA international break.

South Africa started the match strongly, with Oswin Appollis troubling the Rwandan defence. His play set up Thalente Mbatha, who unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box to give Bafana Bafana a 1-0 lead just five minutes in. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 26th minute after a slick team move, with Appollis scoring from a pass by Orlando Pirates teammate Evidence Makgopa.

After halftime, Hugo Broos’ side maintained their intensity, pressing for more goals. In the 72nd minute, Appollis delivered his second assist of the match with a corner, which Makgopa converted to seal South Africa’s 3-0 victory. The result capped a dominant performance for the Southern African giants and confirmed their place at the 2026 World Cup.
