South Africa Plans Bid to Host Final of New CAF Nations League

South Africa is preparing to bid for the hosting rights to the final of the new African Nations League, according to South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan. The proposed competition is part of CAF’s wider overhaul of its senior national team calendar.

Jordaan revealed the plan while outlining South Africa’s priorities following the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana head coach. He said SAFA hopes to bring the showpiece final to the country if the bidding process allows it.

CAF announced the creation of the African Nations League in December 2025. The competition is designed to provide more regular high-level international football and increase the commercial appeal of African national team competitions.

Jordaan said the existing African Nations Championship, commonly known as CHAN, will be scrapped under the new structure. The Nations League is expected to take its place as CAF reshapes its senior men's competitions.

CAF has been working on the competition's format and calendar, but several details remain under discussion. The governing body said in August that work on the African Nations League was continuing, with the format and other organisational details still to be finalised.

South Africa's interest in hosting the final reflects the country's established record of staging major football events. The nation hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and has continued to maintain several venues capable of accommodating major international fixtures.

The country is also set to host the 2027 CAF Super Cup in Tshwane. The match will bring together the winners of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup on November 8, 2026.

Jordaan also identified the 2030 FIFA World Cup as a major long-term objective for South African football. The tournament will be staged across Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with South Africa seeking to build on its experience as the first African country to host the World Cup.

For now, South Africa's proposed Nations League bid remains an intention rather than a confirmed application. CAF must still finalise the competition structure and hosting arrangements before the bidding process can take shape.
