Alexander Sorloth’s stunning hat-trick propelled Atletico Madrid into the Champions League last 16 with a dominant 4-1 victory over Club Brugge on Tuesday, securing a 7-4 aggregate win in the play-off round.
The Norwegian striker proved unstoppable at the Metropolitano Stadium, combining clinical finishing with intelligent positioning to settle the tie. After Sorloth opened the scoring, Joel Ordonez equalized for Brugge, but Johnny Cardoso restored Atletico’s lead before Sorloth added two late goals to seal the emphatic win.
Atletico, under Diego Simeone, started the match cautiously. Brugge’s early attempts were blocked, with David Hancko denying Hugo Vetlesen and keeping the visitors competitive. However, Atletico struck first when Jan Oblak launched a long ball that found Sorloth, who held off his marker and beat goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, despite the keeper mishandling the shot.
The Rojiblancos twice lost their lead in the previous leg in Belgium, and Brugge leveled the score again just before halftime. Ordonez nodded in a corner flick from Brandon Mechele, threatening Atletico’s progress. The visitors almost went ahead, but Oblak produced a spectacular save to keep them at bay.
After the break, Atletico regained control. Cardoso fired home from the edge of the box to put the hosts ahead, and Sorloth doubled the lead with a well-placed finish following a slick combination involving Ademola Lookman and Antoine Griezmann. He completed his hat-trick by volleying Matteo Ruggeri’s cross in the final minutes, capping an outstanding individual performance.
Sorloth’s form has been impressive this season; with 10 goals in 2026, including a brace against Espanyol in LaLiga on Saturday, he has proven decisive even as Simeone rotates his squad. Atletico’s progression into the Champions League last 16 underlines their growing attacking firepower and Sorloth’s growing importance.
