Son Heung-min calls for Tottenham wake-up call after Fulham defeat

Posted : 17 March 2024

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min expressed his disappointment following their lackluster performance in a 3-0 defeat against Fulham, emphasizing the need for introspection and a collective wake-up call. Rodrigo Muniz's brace alongside Sasa Lukic's goal secured Fulham's victory, while Spurs struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm, failing to score for the first time in the league under manager Ange Postecoglou.

Son admitted the team's effort was below par, acknowledging that everyone, including himself, must take responsibility for the disappointing display. Despite entering the match on the back of a convincing win against Crystal Palace and an impressive 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, Spurs failed to replicate their recent form, leaving them in need of serious self-assessment.

The defeat against Fulham dealt a blow to Tottenham's aspirations of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, with fourth-placed Aston Villa now having the opportunity to extend their lead with a victory against West Ham. Son lamented the subpar performance, stating that it fell short of the standards set by the team throughout the season, and expressed sympathy for the disappointed fans who deserved better.

Manager Ange Postecoglou echoed Son's sentiments, highlighting Tottenham's lack of intensity and tempo in their overall play, particularly in the final third. While acknowledging the team's shortcomings in attack, Postecoglou emphasized the broader disappointment in the team's overall performance, pointing out the absence of the intensity and tempo that had been hallmarks of their play throughout the season.
