Nasarawa United FC, nicknamed the Solid Miners, showcased resilience and tactical discipline to secure a goalless draw against Plateau United in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 17 clash at the New Jos International Stadium, Plateau State. The result allowed Nasarawa United to maintain their position at the top of the league table.
Both teams entered the contest eager for victory. Nasarawa United sought their first away win in Jos against the Peace Boys, while Plateau United aimed to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Rivers United the previous Thursday.
Coach Mangut Mbwas, inspired by the presence of the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, and Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, returned to a stadium where he last coached before joining Nasarawa United. He guided his side with strategic defensive play and well-timed offensive moves, ensuring that the team could temper Plateau United’s pressure while claiming their first point ever on the road against the Jos-based team in a league encounter.
Sunday’s result kept the Solid Miners at the summit with 31 points, one ahead of second-placed Rivers United, who have a game in hand. Plateau United remain just above the relegation zone on goal difference, compounding their struggles.
Looking ahead, Nasarawa United will host newly promoted Barau FC of Kano at the Lafia City Stadium in their next league fixture.
Coach Mbwas reflected on the performance, stating: “In every game, we aim to secure the maximum points, regardless of the venue. We knew Plateau United would push hard after losing their last home match, especially since we had never earned points here before.
“Our game plan largely paid off, even though they also had their moments. A share of the spoils was the best outcome for both sides today. Plateau United are a good team, but they are in a transitional phase, which any club could experience.
“Our focus remains on taking one game at a time, but if opportunities arise, we can also challenge for the title. For now, our target is each match as it comes.”
