Nigeria National League club Sokoto United have paid ₦3.25 million in unpaid debts owed to former players Okon Otop and Isaac Ali. The financial settlement allows the club to complete its registration process for the upcoming 2026/27 NNL campaign without administrative delays.
The payment follows strict enforcement by the Nigeria Football Federation Players' Status and Arbitration Committee. The second-tier league body barred indebted clubs from registering players without showing proof of debt clearance. League authorities warned that non-compliant clubs risk total exclusion from participating in the new domestic season.
Okon Otop praised the league leadership and arbitration panel for enforcing financial discipline across Nigerian football. He noted that protecting player contracts ensures justice and improves overall professionalism in the domestic system.
"I want to thank the NNL leadership for their resolve to ensure owing clubs settle their debts," Otop said. "My appreciation also goes to the arbitration committee for protecting players' rights."
The NNL registration deadline requires all teams to submit official clearance certificates for outstanding salaries and contractual fees before competition kick-off on October 31. Sokoto United's prompt resolution removes major administrative hurdles as they finalize squad preparations for the new season.
