Lagos-based Smart City FC is determined to move past their 2-0 defeat to Abia Comets in the opening day of the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) at Enyimba International Stadium, Aba. Coach Olayiwola Dabiri urged the team to treat the loss as just one setback in a long season, emphasizing that such results are part of football.
Despite the defeat, Dabiri praised his players for their fighting spirit, noting that the mistakes observed during the match would be corrected ahead of their crucial second-round fixture against local rivals, Inter Lagos FC. “I truly appreciate my boys for putting up a good fight against Abia Comets. Despite the loss, we gave a good account of ourselves,” he said.
The coach added that he encouraged the players to keep their heads up and focus on the upcoming derby. “I am proud of them and have told them to raise their heads and prepare for the next big game against Inter Lagos. This league season is like a marathon with many matches, and losing the first game does not define us,” Dabiri explained.
Looking ahead, Dabiri expressed confidence that his team would secure positive results throughout the season. “Our goal is to earn promotion to the NPFL, and we will do everything humanly possible to achieve that, by the grace of God,” he said.
Smart City FC will face Inter Lagos FC this weekend in a highly anticipated local derby at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, aiming to bounce back from their opening day setback and make a strong statement in the league.
