Tottenham Complete Club-Record Signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham

Posted : 02 July 2026

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a deal reported to be worth a club-record £85 million. The 21-year-old becomes Spurs' biggest-ever transfer as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Fernandes makes the move across London after West Ham's relegation from the Premier League. The transfer surpasses Tottenham's previous record signing, the £52 million they spent to bring Dutch attacker Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig last summer.

The Portugal international said Tottenham's stature and the influence of head coach Roberto De Zerbi played a major role in his decision to join the North London club. Fernandes revealed that his conversations with the Italian manager convinced him the move was the right choice, adding that they share the same football philosophy centred on intensity, teamwork and a winning mentality.

Fernandes first arrived in English football when he joined Southampton after progressing through Sporting Lisbon's renowned academy. Since moving to the Premier League, he has made 72 league appearances and scored five goals, establishing himself as one of the division's promising young midfielders.

Although he earned his senior Portugal debut in April, Fernandes was left out of Roberto Martinez's squad for the FIFA World Cup. Reports also suggested that Manchester United had been monitoring the midfielder before Tottenham secured his signature.

De Zerbi praised his new recruit, describing Fernandes as a player he has admired for some time. The Spurs boss highlighted the midfielder's technical quality, work rate and composure under pressure, believing his experience in the Premier League will allow him to make an immediate impact despite his young age.

The Italian added that Fernandes possesses the intelligence and courage required to fit into Tottenham's style of play and expressed confidence that the club provides the ideal environment for the midfielder to continue his development.

Fernandes becomes Tottenham's fourth confirmed signing of the summer transfer window as De Zerbi reshapes the squad following last season's narrow escape from relegation. Spurs have also reportedly agreed a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, while goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka and defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke have also joined the club.

Tottenham will begin their Premier League campaign on 22 August with an away fixture against Brentford as De Zerbi looks to guide the club towards a much-improved season.
