League leaders Rivers United FC saw their impressive run slowed after suffering a dramatic late defeat to Shooting Stars SC in a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League encounter in Ibadan.
The clash at the iconic Lekan Salami Stadium delivered tension and late drama, as the Oluyole Warriors struck in stoppage time to snatch all three points from the table-toppers.
Heading into the fixture, coach Finidi George and his Rivers United side were in high spirits after consecutive home victories over El Kanemi Warriors and Bendel Insurance FC.
However, their away struggles resurfaced as Shooting Stars capitalised on key moments to secure victory.
The hosts took control of the contest in the 34th minute when Sodiq Ibrahim found the back of the net to give Shooting Stars a deserved lead before halftime.
Rivers United responded strongly in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 68th minute when Wasiu Falolu restored parity for the Port Harcourt side, briefly raising hopes of salvaging a point on the road.
Just when it appeared the leaders would escape with a draw, Qamar Adegoke produced a dramatic stoppage-time strike to seal the win for Shooting Stars, sending the Ibadan faithful into celebration.
The result marks the fourth defeat of the season for Rivers United. Notably, three of those losses have come away from home against Bayelsa United FC, Barau FC, and now Shooting Stars, while Bayelsa United also handed them their only home defeat of the campaign.
Despite the setback, Rivers United remain top of the NPFL table, holding a two-point lead with a game in hand. Speaking after the match, Finidi George expressed confidence that his team will quickly bounce back as they prepare for another away test against Ikorodu City FC on Sunday.
