Shola Ameobi Named Newcastle United Head of Corporate Affairs

Former Super Eagles forward Shola Ameobi has been appointed as Newcastle United's new Head of Corporate Affairs, continuing his long association with the Premier League club in a senior executive position. The appointment is part of Newcastle's efforts to strengthen its leadership structure away from the pitch.

Ameobi takes up the newly created role after spending the last seven years as the club's Loans Coordinator. During that period, he worked closely with young players sent out on loan, helping to support their development and transition while representing the club throughout the loan process.

In his new position, the former striker will work alongside Newcastle's senior leadership team. His responsibilities will include building relationships with civic leaders, regulatory bodies, commercial partners, and the club's former players as Newcastle continue to expand their operations on and off the field.

Ameobi's promotion also reflects his commitment to professional development after retirement. He is part of the inaugural group in the Premier League's Player-to-Executive Pathways Scheme, an initiative designed to help former footballers move into leadership and executive roles within the sport. The programme aims to improve diversity in football administration while equipping retired players with the skills required for senior management positions.

Speaking about his ambitions, Ameobi expressed his desire to see more Black former players take up executive positions in football. He said creating pathways into leadership is important because former professionals can continue making valuable contributions to the game after their playing careers have ended.

Ameobi remains one of Newcastle United's most recognisable modern figures. The Nigerian-born striker came through the club's academy and made more than 390 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions, scoring over 75 goals during a career that spanned 14 years at St James' Park. He later played for Gaziantep BB, Crystal Palace, and Bolton Wanderers before retiring.

At international level, Ameobi represented Nigeria after switching allegiance from England. He earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles and was part of the squad that reached the Round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

His latest appointment highlights Newcastle United's continued confidence in his leadership qualities and ensures one of the club's most respected former players remains at the heart of its long-term development on and off the pitch.
