Shehu Dikko Backs School Football Revival to Honor Late Legend Henry Nwosu

Posted : 12 May 2026

National Sports Commission Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko believes the best way to honor late football icon Henry Nwosu is through the revival of school football. Dikko shared these thoughts while meeting with Nwosu’s family and burial committee members at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. He emphasized that the late winger remains a shining example of how grassroots sports can produce national heroes.

Nwosu was a key member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winning squad. He gained fame at a remarkably young age after transitioning directly from school competitions to the senior national team. Dikko noted that the history of the Principals' Cup is incomplete without mentioning Nwosu’s impact. The Chairman wants this legacy to inspire a new generation of student-athletes across Nigeria.

The NSC boss proposed naming a specific school sports tournament after Nwosu to keep his name in the history books. He stated that the commission would work with the Imo State Government to ensure a lasting tribute. This initiative aligns with the commission's current goal of discovering talent through educational institutions. Dikko promised that the commission will provide full support for the upcoming burial proceedings.

The family of the late footballer expressed their deep grief during the visit. Nwosu’s sister, Mrs. Ijeoma Onyewuchi, described him as a beloved brother whose absence leaves a massive void. She requested the commission’s help in ensuring the funeral honors his massive contributions to the nation. Representatives from Imo State also called for a state burial to reflect Nwosu’s legendary status.

Supporters are asking for official national honors during the final rites. These include draping his casket in the Nigerian flag and observing a national minute of silence. Nwosu passed away on March 14, 2026, at the age of 62. He is scheduled to be laid to rest on June 6, 2026, in Naze, Imo State. The football community continues to mourn the loss of one of its most gifted players.
