Serie A secures fifth Champions League spot for next season amidst European performance surge

Posted : 19 April 2024

Serie A secures five Champions League spots for the upcoming season, clinching one of the two additional places awarded based on performance across European competitions. Italy's dominance throughout the season ensured its position in the top two, with three Italian teams progressing to the semifinals, surpassing the Premier League's performance as its clubs faltered in the quarterfinals.

Despite no Italian team reaching the Champions League quarterfinals, Serie A's strong showing in the Europa League and Europa Conference League propelled it to the top of the coefficient rankings, guaranteeing its place in the top two. AS Roma, Atalanta, and Fiorentina's success in the Europa competitions solidified Serie A's position and its fifth Champions League berth.

Meanwhile, England's disappointment in the quarterfinals, with Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, and West Ham United all being eliminated, opened the door for Germany to claim the remaining European Performance Spot. With Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund's victories over English clubs, the Bundesliga strengthened its position in second place, leaving the Premier League behind in the race for additional Champions League berths.

The implications of the expanded Champions League format mean that fifth place in Serie A, currently held by Roma with Atalanta in sixth, will now secure a Champions League spot. Additionally, if either Roma or Atalanta win the Europa League and finish outside the top four, Serie A could boast six representatives in the Champions League, including the top four finishers, the Europa League titleholders, and the European Performance Spot recipient. Similar scenarios apply to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, further shaping the landscape of European football for the upcoming season.
