Dakar and Rabat have traditionally shared close diplomatic and cultural ties, but relations have been tested by a contentious decision over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently overturned Senegal’s victory in the final, formally awarding the title to Morocco after ruling that Senegal forfeited the match — a move that has provoked outrage and diplomatic uneas
In the Senegalese capital, heightened security has been visible around areas associated with Moroccan merchants, although no public disturbances have been reported since CAF’s ruling.
Senegal’s government has lodged an appeal against the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and is also calling for an international investigation into alleged corruption within CAF, framing the episode as damaging to the credibility of African football governance.
Demonstrators have even urged a boycott of Moroccan goods in response.
The dispute has also touched on the handling of Senegalese fans detained in Morocco after unrest during the final, with critics in Dakar describing their imprisonment as politically charged.
Senegalese officials, including the prime minister, have lamented how sport has spilled over into broader diplomatic tensions between the two nations, even as others stress the long‑standing bonds that link their peoples.
Despite the controversy, many analysts point out that deep historical and social connections — such as religious linkages and extensive economic cooperation involving Moroccan investment in Senegal — have not vanished, suggesting that both sides still have incentives to manage the fallout.
Moroccan officials have so far refrained from direct comment on the football dispute, preferring to focus on maintaining broader relations.
