Senegal Keep Knockout Hopes Alive Ahead of Must-Win Clash Against Iraq

Posted : 25 June 2026

Senegal will look to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign alive when they take on Iraq in their final Group I fixture at Toronto Stadium on Friday evening. The West Africans enter the match knowing that only a win will give them a realistic chance of advancing to the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

The Lions of Teranga have endured a difficult start to the competition. They opened their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to France, where Kylian Mbappe starred with two goals, before suffering a narrow 3-2 loss against Norway. Those results have left Senegal without a point heading into their final group-stage encounter.

Iraq have also struggled in the tournament and sit bottom of Group I. The Middle Eastern side were beaten 4-1 by Norway in their opening match before falling 3-0 to France in their second outing. Despite their elimination concerns, Iraq will be eager to finish their campaign on a positive note.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw remains optimistic about his team's chances despite the setbacks. He emphasized that qualification is still mathematically possible and urged his players to focus solely on securing three points before hoping results elsewhere work in their favour.

Much of Senegal’s attacking responsibility will rest on the shoulders of captain Sadio Mane. The experienced forward is expected to lead by example in a match that could define his nation’s tournament. His ability to produce in high-pressure situations makes him a key figure for the African side.

For Iraq, goalkeeper Ahmed Basil could play a decisive role. With Senegal likely to dominate possession and create chances, Basil is expected to be heavily involved as Iraq attempt to frustrate their opponents and end the competition with a positive result.

With both teams seeking redemption after difficult starts, Friday’s showdown promises to be a fiercely contested battle, although Senegal have far more at stake as they chase a place in the knockout rounds.
