AFCON 2025: Senegal Eyes Historic Qualification as Vintage DR Congo Looms

Posted : 26 December 2025

After winning their opening matches, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo will target a second victory that would secure qualification for the knockout stage when they meet in their Group D fixture at the Grand Stade de Tanger on December 27. Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT).

This will be the third meeting between Senegal and DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations finals. Their first AFCON encounter came in 1968, when DR Congo won 2–1 in their final group match and went on to lift the trophy that year.

Their most recent AFCON meeting occurred in the quarter-finals of the 2002 tournament, with Senegal claiming a 2–0 victory through goals from Salif Diao and El Hadji Diouf, before advancing to their first AFCON final.

Overall, this is the 11th meeting between the two nations. Senegal have won six matches, DR Congo two, with two draws, and the Teranga Lions are unbeaten in their last eight encounters (six wins and two draws). DR Congo’s last victory over Senegal came in a 1969 friendly.

The two teams also met during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The first match in Dakar ended 1–1 in June 2024, while Senegal secured a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory in Kinshasa in September 2025 to book their World Cup qualification.

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw was also in charge when Senegal defeated DR Congo 3–0 at the 2022 African Nations Championship, a tournament Senegal went on to win. As a player, Thiaw was an unused substitute during Senegal’s 2002 AFCON quarter-final victory over DR Congo.

Senegal come into the match in strong form after recording a commanding 3–0 victory over Botswana in their opening game, extending their unbeaten run in AFCON group matches. DR Congo, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a narrow 1–0 win over Benin, continuing a solid defensive trend in recent tournaments.

Both sides now head into this clash knowing that another win would secure early passage into the knockout stage, setting the scene for a fiercely contested and high-stakes encounter in Tangier.
