Senegal delivered a statement performance in their opening match at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), dismantling the Democratic Republic of Congo 4-0 in Group A on Sunday. The emphatic victory in Mohammédia not only marked an ideal start for the Senegalese side but also placed them at the top of the group standings after the first round of games.
The match came a day after hosts Morocco and Zambia played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in Rabat. Senegal, however, wasted no time making their presence felt on the tournament stage. By halftime, they had already sealed the win with a four-goal lead, allowing them to ease off in the second period and give game time to their bench.
Mama Diop opened the scoring just eight minutes into the match, striking a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box that flew past the Congolese goalkeeper. Just five minutes later, Senegal doubled their lead. A long ball out of defence found Nguenar Ndiaye, who rounded the keeper and, despite stumbling, managed to slot home confidently.
The pressure continued to mount for DR Congo, as Diop found the net again in the 22nd minute. A well-timed run allowed her to beat the offside trap and finish coolly for her second of the match. Ndiaye then capped off a stellar first half by heading home her second goal, glancing the ball into the net five minutes before the break.
In the second half, DR Congo managed to tighten up defensively, preventing further damage. However, Senegal came close to adding a fifth goal in the 73rd minute when substitute Safiétou Sagna’s header from close range was expertly tipped onto the crossbar by Congolese goalkeeper Fideline Ngoy.
With this dominant performance, Senegal have firmly established themselves as early contenders in Group A. Later on Sunday, Group B action was set to begin with Nigeria facing Tunisia and Algeria taking on Botswana, both fixtures scheduled for Casablanca.
