The Scottish Football Association has withdrawn its backing for Gianni Infantino and confirmed it will not vote for him in the 2027 FIFA presidential election. SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell said Scotland had aligned itself with the wider UEFA position following growing concerns over FIFA’s leadership.
Maxwell said the Scottish FA agreed with UEFA’s assessment that there is now a lack of confidence in FIFA’s leadership. Scotland joins England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, which have also withdrawn their support for Infantino ahead of next year’s election.
The opposition has intensified following Infantino’s abandoned plan to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise, a proposed commercial company that would manage FIFA competition and ticketing rights. The proposal included plans to sell a stake to private investors and triggered strong criticism from several football confederations.
FairSquare has also challenged Infantino’s eligibility to seek another term, arguing that FIFA’s statutes limit presidents to three four-year terms. The organisation disputes FIFA’s previous decision to exclude Infantino’s 2016-19 period from the calculation, saying the interpretation undermines the purpose of the term-limit rules.
Despite the growing opposition, Infantino continues to have significant backing, particularly from the African and South American confederations. The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027, with candidates required to enter the race before the November deadline.
