Saudi Pro League eyes Premier League stars and young talents in ambitious summer transfer plans

Posted : 28 February 2024

Saudi Pro League (SPL) teams are gearing up for an ambitious summer transfer window, eyeing established Premier League stars such as Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Raphaël Varane, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Andreas Pereira for the upcoming season, according a source.

Additionally, there is a focus on signing younger talents, with 20-year-old Juventus forward Matìas Soulè on the radar. While not expected to match the record £757 million spent in 2023, SPL teams are planning an aggressive transfer strategy with a significant outlay on player fees.

In the 2023 summer transfer window, SPL's spending ranked second only to the Premier League, totaling £1.1 billion. Sources indicate specific needs for SPL teams in the upcoming window, with Al Ahli seeking a striker, Al Nassr, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, targeting a goalkeeper, and Al Ittihad looking to bolster their squad with a center-back and central midfielder.

Al Hilal, currently topping the SPL table and known for signing Neymar last summer, is seven points clear of Al Nassr. Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth Public Investment Fund (PIF) holds controlling stakes in Al Ittihad, Al Ahli, Al Nassr, and Al Hilal.

In anticipation of potential SPL promotion, Al Qadisiyah, leading the second division and owned by Saudi Aramco, a state-owned oil company with a value exceeding $2 trillion, is also expected to make significant investments. Additionally, the SPL aims to attract high-profile coaches, with names like Thomas Tuchel, Sergio Conceicao of FC Porto, and Mauricio Pochettino of Chelsea being mentioned as possible candidates to join the league.
