Athletic Bilbao continued their impressive start to the LaLiga season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Monday night, maintaining their unbeaten run and climbing into a five-way tie at the top of the table.
The decisive moment came in the 66th minute when Oihan Sancet, making his return after a knee injury kept him out for three weeks, won and converted a penalty at San Mamés. His goal marked a perfect comeback and gave Athletic their best league start since 2013.
Bilbao now sit level on six points alongside Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal, and Getafe. Their strong opening follows a summer in which they secured Champions League qualification, raising expectations for a promising campaign.
Elsewhere, Getafe extended their flawless record with a 2-1 triumph away to Sevilla. Adrian Liso was the star of the night, scoring twice — once in the 15th minute and again just after halftime — to put the visitors in control. Sevilla’s only response came through an unfortunate own goal from Juan Iglesias just before the interval.
The result leaves Getafe joint-top of the table, while Sevilla continue to search for their first win of the season.
This weekend also saw Real Madrid and Barcelona earn dramatic victories of their own. Kylian Mbappé netted twice in Madrid’s 3-0 success against Osasuna, while Barcelona staged a thrilling comeback from two goals down to edge Levante 3-2.
