Samson Tijani Features as Podbrezová Thrash Michalovce 4-1 in Slovakia

Posted : 27 October 2026

Nigerian midfielder Samson Tijani was involved as FK Železiarne Podbrezová secured an emphatic 4-1 away victory over MFK Zemplín Michalovce in the Slovak Niké Liga on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The result came in the 12th round of the 2026/2027 season and helped Podbrezová move ahead of their opponents in the league standings.

Podbrezová took control early when Martin Chrien opened the scoring in the eighth minute. The midfielder finished after receiving a pass from Jakub Luka, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage that they maintained until half-time.

The visitors strengthened their position after the break through Balša Mrvaljevič. The forward scored in the 69th minute before adding another goal seven minutes later to put Podbrezová firmly in control of the contest.

Tijani started the match in midfield but was substituted at half-time, with René Paraj coming on for the Nigerian international. Mrvaljevič continued his outstanding display by completing his hat-trick in the 87th minute, finishing a dominant second-half performance from the visitors.

Michalovce pulled one goal back in the 82nd minute through substitute José López. However, the hosts could not build momentum, and Podbrezová restored their three-goal advantage five minutes later. Michalovce's difficult afternoon continued in stoppage time when Ben Cottrell received a red card in the 90th minute.

The victory was particularly important for Podbrezová because it ended a run of two consecutive league defeats. It also marked the first match under interim coach Boris Godál, who replaced Štefan Markulík during the week. Godál praised his team's improved finishing and highlighted Mrvaljevič's three-goal contribution after the game.

The result lifted Podbrezová to fifth place with 17 points from 12 matches, while Michalovce remained seventh with 14 points. The three points strengthened Podbrezová's position in the race for a place in the league's championship group.

For Tijani, the appearance provided another opportunity to gain experience in European football. Although he did not score, the Nigerian midfielder was part of the starting lineup for a victory that could help his team build momentum under its new interim coach.
