Mohamed Salah returned to the pitch for Liverpool on Saturday and played a decisive role as the Premier League champions secured a 2–0 victory over Brighton at Anfield. The Egyptian forward provided an assist after coming off the bench, following days of intense scrutiny surrounding his relationship with the club and manager Arne Slot.
Liverpool made a blistering start to the match, opening the scoring inside the first minute through Hugo Ekitike, who capitalised on early pressure to put the hosts ahead. Despite trailing, Brighton created several chances to draw level, but their missed opportunities proved costly.
Salah was introduced in the 26th minute after defender Joe Gomez was forced off through injury. His entrance was met with loud applause from the Anfield crowd, reflecting the fans’ continued support amid recent controversy. Brighton threatened again early in the second half, with Diego Gomez striking the post and Brajan Gruda going close as the visitors searched for an equaliser.
Liverpool eventually doubled their advantage on the hour mark when Ekitike headed home Salah’s corner to claim his second goal of the match. Salah himself nearly added to the scoreline late on, but fired over the bar after being set up by Federico Chiesa.
The result lifts Liverpool up to sixth place in the league table, offering some relief to Slot after a difficult run of form that had seen his side win just twice in their previous ten league outings.
Salah’s appearance came after a tense week in which he publicly criticised the club for leaving him out of recent matches and questioned his relationship with the manager. He was also omitted from Liverpool’s midweek Champions League trip to Inter Milan, further fuelling speculation about his future.
The 33-year-old is now set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt, with the duration of his absence depending on how far his national team progress in the tournament. Despite rumours linking him with a move away from Anfield, Salah recently renewed his contract and remains one of Liverpool’s most decorated players, having won multiple league titles and the Champions League during his time on Merseyside.
