Salah Inspires Egypt to Historic 3-1 World Cup Win Over New Zealand

Posted : 22 June 2026

Egypt produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 3-1 at BC Place in Vancouver. This historic victory represents the first World Cup win in the history of the North African nation. The vital three points propelled the Pharaohs to the top of Group G.

New Zealand made a brighter start and opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Defender Finn Surman escaped his marker to power home a header from a corner delivery. The Oceania side maintained this deserved advantage until the half-time whistle.

The Pharaohs emerged from the interval with much higher intensity and purpose. Mostafa Ziko leveled the score in the 58th minute with an excellent close-range header. He accurately connected with a precise right-sided cross from defender Mohamed Hany.

Captain Mohamed Salah then took control of the match to complete the turnaround. The winger exchanged passes with Ziko before guiding a low finish into the far corner. His 67th-minute strike made him the oldest World Cup goalscorer in Egyptian football history.

The talismanic forward turned provider in the 82nd minute to seal the victory. Salah delivered an accurate corner kick into the penalty area. Substitute Mahmoud Trezeguet threw himself forward to head home the third goal.

Egypt now lead Group G with four points from their opening two fixtures. They previously recorded a 1-1 draw against Belgium in their tournament opener. Meanwhile, New Zealand remain at the bottom of the standings with just one point.

The other group match between Belgium and Iran ended in a goalless draw. This leaves both teams level on two points behind the group leaders. Egypt will face Iran in their final group match in Seattle on Saturday.

Skipper Mohamed Salah celebrated the historic achievement with his teammates after the final whistle. He described the victory as a great achievement for all the players and staff. He added that the squad wants to write history and qualify for the next round.
