Three years after their last on-field encounter, former Liverpool teammates Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will meet again on Wednesday as Senegal and Egypt clash in the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals in Tangiers.
This will mark the first time the pair have shared a pitch since Liverpool’s 2022 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid. Shortly after that final, Mane moved to Bayern Munich before joining Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, while Salah remains at Liverpool despite reduced playing time under coach Arne Slot, though he has been linked with a future move to Saudi Arabia.
Salah, who turns 34 in June, has been key to Egypt’s run to the semifinals, scoring four goals in four matches as he aims to win his first AFCON title. The Egypt captain has experienced the heartbreak of two final defeats, including a penalty shootout loss to Senegal in 2022, where Mane scored the decisive kick.
The pair also clashed in a World Cup qualifying play-off months later, with Mane scoring again as Senegal triumphed. Now, both veterans have another chance to compete at the highest level, with Senegal chasing a third final in four tournaments and Egypt aiming for a record-extending eighth continental title.
During their five years together at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, Mane and Salah formed a formidable attacking trio with Roberto Firmino, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. Mane has admitted that their partnership was not always smooth, joking that Salah sometimes refused to pass him the ball.
Now on opposing sides, both players are determined to lead their nations to glory, with Mane feeling less pressure after already winning an AFCON title and Salah eager to claim the elusive continental crown.
