Ruben Amorim Praises United’s Grit After Boxing Day Win Over Newcastle

Posted : 27 December 2025

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim celebrated a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, a result made even more impressive given the team’s injury and suspension woes.

The win, secured by a stunning strike from Patrick Dorgu—starting on the right wing despite being a left-back—was achieved by a defence featuring Leny Yoro, Tyler Fredricson, Ayden Heaven, and Tyrell Malacia.

This combination of youth and fringe players helped United claim only their second clean sheet of the season and marked their first Premier League win without Bruno Fernandes since March 2022.

Amorim opted for a back four for the first time since joining from Sporting CP, a tactical tweak that proved effective in the opening half.

He praised the players’ spirit and determination, particularly in the second half under intense pressure from Newcastle. "We suffer all together," he said, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and resilience.

The victory came despite numerous absences: Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui were away at AFCON, Fernandes was sidelined with a hamstring injury, and several key defenders, including Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, were unavailable.

During the match, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martínez, Luke Shaw, and Casemiro all had to be substituted, while Malacia and Fredricson made rare appearances.

Newcastle pressured United in the second half but managed only limited shots on target, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens saving three attempts, including a shot that hit the crossbar.

United controlled just 33% of possession—their lowest in a victorious league match since January 2023—but their defensive organization and Dorgu’s decisive goal ensured they claimed all three points.

Amorim can take comfort from the performance of his makeshift squad, with youngsters and returning players stepping up in the absence of senior stars.

This win moved United into fifth place in the Premier League, highlighting their potential to challenge for a European spot even while key players recover. The manager’s focus now is maintaining consistency and resilience until Fernandes, Mbeumo, Diallo, and De Ligt return.
