Ruben Amorim Admits Manchester United’s Problems

Posted : 09 May 2025

Ruben Amorim has openly acknowledged Manchester United's deep-rooted issues despite their convincing 7-1 aggregate triumph over Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League semifinals. The win, capped by a 4-1 second-leg victory at Old Trafford, secured United a place in the final against Tottenham.

However, Amorim highlighted that the scoreline masked the team's flaws, noting their nervous start and chaotic play after conceding first. His remarks reflect ongoing concerns about the team’s Premier League form as they head into a crucial match against West Ham.

Amorim stressed that the club's domestic struggles cannot be overlooked, especially with the possibility of dropping to 17th in the table if results go against them this weekend. He admitted that United's weaknesses were once again exposed during the semifinal and insisted that the team still has significant areas to improve.

Despite the Europa League final looming on May 21, Amorim said he would not entirely rest his key players, emphasizing the need to remain competitive in the league while safeguarding those at risk of injury.

Managing the squad between league responsibilities and the Europa League final is proving challenging for Amorim, who views the European competition – and its Champions League qualification reward – as a top priority. He acknowledged that some players may have lost focus during the recent 4-3 defeat to Brentford due to the looming semifinal.

Nonetheless, he emphasized the importance of using each remaining league match as an opportunity to grow and prepare for the future, reaffirming that Manchester United must uphold high standards in all competitions.

Amorim responded candidly to criticism from pundits like Roy Keane, stating that such feedback is warranted given United's underwhelming league campaign. He accepted the blame and recognized the need for improvement across the board.

Ahead of the Europa League final, Amorim said his decisions would prioritize the club’s long-term success rather than personal interests, underlining the necessity of managing player fitness carefully while maintaining readiness for the crucial showdown against Tottenham.
