Ronaldo Accuses Portugal Coach Jorge Jesus of Breaking His Word

Posted : 07 October 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo has accused Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus of twice going back on his word, saying the breakdown in trust led him to leave the national team camp during the Nations League. The 41-year-old forward, however, apologised for his decision and reaffirmed his willingness to represent Portugal after any disciplinary punishment.

In a lengthy statement, Ronaldo accepted responsibility for walking away from the squad before Portugal’s match against Denmark. He apologised to his teammates and supporters, saying his position as captain made his actions more serious and that he understood the Portuguese Football Federation could sanction him.

Ronaldo said Jesus had initially proposed a plan that would see him miss Portugal’s matches against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness, while featuring in other fixtures. The forward rejected the arrangement because he believed it would set the wrong example for the captain to remain at home while his teammates travelled.

According to Ronaldo, the situation changed before the Norway match when Jesus asked whether he could play for around 30 minutes. Ronaldo agreed and began warming up during the second half, but the coach ultimately left him on the bench. Ronaldo said the decision amounted to the first time Jesus had failed to honour his word.

The disagreement continued after the match. Ronaldo said he and Jesus later discussed the incident and agreed that the coach would explain the circumstances during a subsequent press conference. He said an eight-point account was prepared to clarify that he had not demanded playing time and had respected the coach's decisions.

Ronaldo claimed, however, that Jesus' comments at the press conference did not reflect what they had agreed privately. He described the coach's approach as unusually aggressive and said the experience further damaged his trust in the manager.

Jesus has disputed Ronaldo's version of the events, saying he did not have such an agreement with the player. The Portuguese Football Federation has not immediately responded publicly to Ronaldo's latest statement.

Despite the dispute, Ronaldo made clear that he has not retired from international football. He said that if he remains fit, continues performing for Al-Nassr and serves any suspension imposed on him, he will be ready to return and compete for Portugal.

Ronaldo also acknowledged that leaving the camp was a mistake. He said his frustration over the disagreement with Jesus did not justify abandoning his teammates and accepted that his actions should have consequences.

Portugal, meanwhile, have maintained a perfect Nations League record during the latest international window and advanced to the quarterfinals with matches to spare. Ronaldo's future with the national side will now depend in part on the outcome of any disciplinary action and his relationship with Jesus.
