Rodri Wins World Cup Golden Ball as Spain Celebrate Defensive Masterclass

Spain captain Rodri was named the winner of the Golden Ball as the best player of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after leading La Roja to a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final. The Manchester City midfielder capped an outstanding tournament by lifting football's biggest prize, less than two years after recovering from a serious knee injury.

The 30-year-old admitted he was overwhelmed by the achievement, describing Spain's World Cup triumph as difficult to put into words. Rodri, who suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during a Manchester City match against Arsenal in September 2024 before returning to competitive action the following May, said his journey was proof that setbacks can be overcome with determination and a positive mindset.

Reflecting on his recovery, Rodri encouraged younger players to view adversity as an opportunity for growth. He explained that his philosophy has always been to remain optimistic through both success and disappointment, adding that Spain approached the final with courage and confidence, determined to challenge Argentina head-on regardless of the outcome.

Spain's triumph was built on one of the finest defensive displays in World Cup history, according to left-back Marc Cucurella. The Real Madrid defender praised the collective effort that saw Luis de la Fuente's side concede just one goal in eight matches, the fewest ever by a World Cup-winning team during a single tournament.

Belgium were the only nation to breach Spain's defence throughout the competition, scoring in the quarter-finals, while the rest of the tournament showcased the team's organisation and discipline. Cucurella stressed that the defensive record was not solely the achievement of the back line and goalkeeper, but the result of every player contributing in attack and defence.

After substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive extra-time goal against 10-man Argentina at MetLife Stadium, Spain secured their second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their historic triumph in 2010. Cucurella said the squad could finally relax after nearly 50 days together in camp, insisting the players had earned the right to celebrate their remarkable achievement.
