Rodri Faces Crucial Decision as Barcelona Join Real Madrid in Transfer Race

Manchester City midfielder Rodri is facing a pivotal moment in his career, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly interested in signing the Spain international.

The 30-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has yet to agree on an extension, raising speculation over whether he will remain in the Premier League or return to La Liga.

Recent reports indicate that Barcelona have joined long-time admirers Real Madrid in the race for his signature, although sources at the Catalan club have played down the rumours.

Rodri's recent performances have only strengthened his reputation despite injury setbacks over the past two seasons.

After recovering from serious knee and hamstring problems, the Ballon d'Or winner returned to top form by helping Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he was also named Player of the Tournament.

However, he is currently sidelined after undergoing back surgery and has yet to rejoin Manchester City's squad during their pre-season preparations in Asia.

Manchester City remain hopeful of keeping one of their most influential players, with club officials previously stating that they expect Rodri to stay.

Even so, any potential transfer would require a substantial offer, while the midfielder must decide whether to renew his contract, leave as a free agent next summer, or pursue a move back to Spain before the transfer window closes.

A switch to either Spanish giant would carry different attractions. Barcelona could reunite Rodri with several Spain teammates, including Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and Pedri, while Real Madrid now features former Manchester City teammate Bernardo Silva and is managed by José Mourinho.

Having previously represented Atlético Madrid, Rodri's decision could also generate mixed reactions from supporters in Spain regardless of which club he chooses.
