Roberto De Zerbi Targets Tottenham Revival After Premier League Survival

Roberto De Zerbi believes Tottenham Hotspur are ready to move forward after guiding the club through one of the most difficult periods in its recent history.

The Italian manager recalled the emotional scenes following his first match in charge—a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland—when several players were left devastated in the dressing room, prompting him to challenge the squad with a simple question: "Did we pass away?"

De Zerbi was appointed with only seven Premier League matches remaining and successfully steered Spurs to safety on the final day of the campaign. Having secured the club's top-flight status, he says the focus has now shifted from survival to rebuilding a team capable of competing near the top of English football once again.

The atmosphere around Tottenham has changed dramatically during their pre-season tour of Australia. Instead of the uncertainty that surrounded the club in April, the squad has embraced a renewed sense of optimism, with players settling into a positive environment as several high-profile summer signings integrate into De Zerbi's plans.

Tottenham have invested heavily in strengthening the squad, bringing in players including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andrew Robertson and Martin Dúbravka.

Defender Marcos Senesi, who was granted additional leave after representing Argentina at the World Cup, has also returned to training and is expected to play an important role this season.

The Spurs boss insists the club now deserves to compete for elite talent after avoiding relegation. He revealed that the club prepared separate transfer strategies depending on whether they remained in the Premier League or dropped into the Championship, but is pleased to be working with the more ambitious recruitment plan.

De Zerbi also admitted he held numerous one-on-one meetings with players upon his arrival to understand their intentions.

While acknowledging that some members of the squad may still seek moves elsewhere, he stressed that his immediate priority was ensuring everyone contributed to securing Premier League survival before discussing their futures.

With confidence restored and significant investment made in the playing squad, Tottenham are aiming to leave last season's struggles behind and re-establish themselves as contenders for European qualification and domestic honours under De Zerbi's leadership.
